Marina Rolink

At the recent TMTATC gig in Glasgow's Nice 'n' Sleazy, first support on the night was singer/songwriter Marina Rolink from Glasgow. Ralph's man in Scotland Malcolm Parry was there to check out GingerBeardMen who were sharing the night and took the chance to have a chat with Marina.....

Speaking to Marina after her set she tells me she's only been together with the band 7 months they met at the Music & Sound College in Glasgow - experiencing them live for the first time tonight it doesn't show.

They're confident and proficient, the guitarist using a slide for the opening number, a punk style Mohawk wearing drummer, tight bass and the bubbly petite blond Marina Rolink herself.

With her strong vocals and witty banter between songs she introduces 'Molly's Song' - laughing as she says she doesn't even know a Molly. She flits between acoustic guitar and keyboard, taking us through folk/country tinged pop - at times very Amy MacDonald and Adele sounding.

Some jazzy folk, stripped back acoustic and building up to a ambitious Jim Steinman style pop/rock ballad not unlike early Heart or Bonnie Tyler (but not cheesy sounding) on a track called 'Balloons' which you can hear on her debut E.P 'Cosmic Dust'. She tells me later she's a fan of Steinman's work and also that her dad is Scottish (Aidrie born) but her mum is Russian. We have them to thank for her musical skills and taste! One to watch out for people, a real talent.
